Lux Astrum

Starting in the early 1980's, Lux Astrum (a.k.a. Eric Vasbinder), began experimenting with unique sounds, melodies, and rhythms on his family's upright grand piano. Though he was not ever formally trained on the piano he began to receive a music education in the fifth grade, beginning on the trumpet. For the next few decades, he has continued to experiment and grow his musical tastes. The below is in his words.

I cannot remember a time when I was not playing around on my family's piano. It was great to put together chords and melodies to see what sounded good to me. I never had the opportunity for formal piano lessons, but very much enjoyed music.

Starting in the fourth grade, students in our district had the opportunity to pick an instrument to play for the next year in our school band. I originally wanted to try out for drums as that was the instrument that all the "cool kids" played. However, after our "auditions", I was told the trumpet might be more suitable for me as I found it harder to do multiple, independent things at once. I switched to the trumpet, continuing to play that instrument and eventually the (French) horn as well for many years in grades 5-12 and several years in college. I even entered the choir for a few years in high school and a year in college.

Over the years, I have tasted of many musical styles: for the most part, I find them all equally appealing. I like to try to push my own boundaries, never settling too long on any one thing.

However, at the end of the day, I hope you find something to like in my grab bag o’ sound. Enjoy, and let your spirit be uplifted and energized!
